About Tangmere Dental Care

We are a family-run independent dental practice in Tangmere, just outside Chichester, and we have been looking after people here since 1988. Because our team stays with us for years, most patients see the same clinician visit after visit.

A practice that stays the same, so your care does too

Tangmere Dental Care is independently owned and family-run. We are not part of a corporate chain, so we set our own standards and answer to our patients rather than to a head office. Very few of our staff leave, which means the person treating you this year is usually the person who treated you last year. Your dentist already knows your history, knows which treatments have worked well for you before, and knows what to keep an eye on as the years go by.
Paul Liano is our principal dentist and has run the practice since 1988. In that time he has built a practice that is quietly ahead of the curve technically while still feeling like a local family business. We have been the first practice in the UK to install several pieces of clinical equipment, and we keep investing steadily. You can read more about Paul and the team on our team page.
Our approach to treatment is deliberately conservative. You only get one set of adult teeth, and looked after properly, they should last a lifetime. So we focus first on prevention, which means spotting problems early and helping you keep your own teeth healthy. When a tooth does need work, we repair it as durably as we can, and we only replace it when there is genuinely no other option. The aim is fewer fillings across your lifetime, not more.

Where we are and what it is like inside

The practice sits in Tangmere village, just outside Chichester, in a quiet rural spot overlooking the village playing fields. We are directly accessible from the A27, so we are easy to reach from Chichester, Arundel, Bognor Regis, Emsworth and Portsmouth, and we share a large free car park with the village centre next door. Not being on a busy high street is part of the appeal for many of our patients, because you can arrive and leave in private. The waiting area is calm and the whole building is on the ground floor.
We started here in 1988 as part of a combined medical and dental centre. As the dental side grew we bought the whole building in 2010 and refurbished it, so most of what you see today is new since then.
Inside there are three treatment clinics, all on the ground floor, plus a separate decontamination and sterilisation room. We have our own Cerec milling and ceramic studio, on site since 2007, which lets us make porcelain restorations while you wait instead of sending you away for weeks with a temporary. There is also 3D CT scanning for planning implants, and magnified intra-oral video and digital X-ray in every clinic, with a screen so you can see what we are seeing.

What you can expect from us

Every patient here gets the same commitments, and we would rather write them down than treat them as slogans.

What we will always do

  • Listen properly to your concerns and come back to you with a clear plan.
  • Show you the reasonable treatment options and explain what each is likely to lead to, so the decision stays yours.
  • Act in your interests first, which usually means showing you how to avoid treatment rather than selling you more of it.
  • Give you an estimate before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises afterwards.
  • Guarantee our definitive repair work for at least two years — if a repair we've made fails within that time, we'll redo it at no charge, subject to terms reception can talk you through.
  • Do our best to run to time, because we know yours matters.
  • Charge nothing to cancel with 24 hours' notice. With less notice, we'll try to fill your slot — and if we do, there's no charge either.

In return, we ask

  • Arrive on time and be considerate of our staff and other patients.
  • Tell us when your health changes, including new medications, and let us know if your address or phone number changes.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions we give you, especially in the first few days.
  • Keep coming to your maintenance appointments, because that's how we spot problems early instead of treating them late.
  • If we've looked after you well, tell a friend — word of mouth is how most of our new patients find us.

How we keep the practice safe

Dentistry involves close contact and high-speed instruments, which produce a fine spray in the air. Done properly, the risk to you is very small, but that depends on the right equipment and procedures — so we have invested heavily at every stage, from the air in the room down to the instrument tray.

Filtered, refreshed air

Every part of the building has balanced pressure ventilation that changes the air six times an hour, filtered and passed through a heat exchanger.

Spray captured at the source

Each surgery uses the DentalAir Aeroshield unit, a powerful suction and filter system that catches the spray just above your mouth as it's created, with Virus-Killer air purification that destroys airborne pathogens in the room. We also use rubber dam and Isolite barriers routinely — small in-mouth shields that keep the area dry, stop fragments being swallowed and cut down the spray in the first place.

Surfaces disinfected between patients

For surfaces we use Dentiguard, a disinfectant based on hypochlorous acid — the same substance your own immune system uses.

Tracked instrument sterilisation

Our decontamination and sterilisation facility is in a separate room from the treatment areas, well above the standard most practices work to. Instruments are thermally washed, ultrasonically cleaned, inspected, sealed in sterile pouches, autoclaved and then barcode-tracked. We were the first UK practice to install Melatrace tracking in 2014 and the first to use the Compliance Cloud system in 2010.

Common questions about the practice

Yes. We share a large free car park with the village centre next door, including disabled spaces. It is rarely full, whatever time of day your appointment is.

Mostly. The whole building is on the ground floor. Clinics 1 and 3 are fully wheelchair accessible and are used by both the dentists and the dental therapists every week, so you can still get the full range of treatments. Clinic 2 has limited access, as you would need to stand and take a few steps to get into the chair.

Yes. Our dental chairs can take up to 29 stone. Let reception know when you book if that might be relevant.

Every instrument tray goes through a validated cleaning and sterilisation cycle, is sealed in a sterile pouch and carries a barcode. That barcode is recorded against your file, so we can trace exactly which tray was used at your appointment.

Yes. We are happy to show new patients around before their first appointment. Call reception and we will arrange an informal visit.
